National program in old buildings: “Lift for Life” for millions of Romanians

PSD Senator Robert Cazanciuc announced on Facebook on Friday, December 19, that the blocks in Romania with 3 or 4 floors, built before 1990 and which were not provided with elevators, could soon benefit from elevators.

“I submitted, today, to the Senate, the bill for starting the National Program ‘Elevator for Life’, one of the largest socio-economic projects in recent years, intended for the construction of elevators in 3- or 4-story buildings, built before 1990”Cazanciuc wrote.

The former Minister of Justice specified that approximately 4 million people, from the approximately 90,000 targeted blocks, will benefit from such easy access to their own homes. Beneficiaries include the elderly and the disabled. “They will have decent conditions for access to their own homes,” the senator pointed out.

The Ministry of Development has agreed, for now, to financially support a pilot project for 100 blocks throughout the country. The ultimate goal is for Romania to obtain dedicated European funding so that all eligible blocks are equipped with elevators.

“To begin with, the legal framework designed provides for the implementation of a pilot project, targeting 100 blocks at national level, divided into each county, carried out through the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration. The pilot project will form the basis of Romania’s efforts so that, in the 2028-2034 budget year of the European Union, a funding line dedicated to this national program can be approved”. Cazanciuc explained.

The senator appealed to European Commissioner Roxana Mînzatu to support the project: “I am doing everything in her power to ensure that this program, aimed at access to decent conditions in their own homes, receives a dedicated funding line.”

MP Diana Tușa, who submitted the project alongside Cazanciuc, emphasized the importance of the initiative for Romania’s aging population: “Reality shows us that for many Romanians the elevator is not a fad, but the bridge to the world! The elevator is the only way I can get to the doctor, go shopping, pick up my grandchildren from school or simply go out for a walk.”

The project Lift for Life aims to transform access to collective housing for millions of Romanians, offering both safety and independence to vulnerable people.
