Nine flu deaths were confirmed in the week of January 5-11. The total number of deaths from the current flu season has reached 20.
“In the week of 05.01.2026 – 11.01.2026 (S 02/2026) were reported: 73,880 cases of respiratory infections (clinical flu, IACRS and pneumonia), registering 21.1% more cases compared to the previous week (61,016) and 18.7% fewer cases compared to the same week of the previous season (90,877). The minus variation compared to the calculated average of 99,738 cases from the last seasons (2018-2025, excluding the pandemic seasons) was 25.9%”reports INSP on Thursday.
Also, 8,585 cases of clinical flu were registered nationally, compared to 10,570 registered in the previous week, 1.5 times more than in the same week of the previous season (5,876) and 2.6 times more than the average of the last 5 seasons (3,353).
Cases of clinical flu were reported by all counties, the most being in the municipality of Bucharest (1,026) and in the counties of Constanţa (630), Prahova (616), Cluj (576).
At the same time, 37 cases of severe acute respiratory infections (SARS) were registered, 7 less than the previous week and 2 less than the same period of the previous season.
There are 172 cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza (37 with AH3 influenza virus, 8 with AH1 influenza virus and 127 with non-subtyped influenza A virus).
Since the beginning of the season, 744 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza have been reported, of which: 258 with the AH3 influenza virus; 38 with influenza virus AH1; 443 cases with non-subtyped influenza A virus; 4 cases with influenza B virus; a case with influenza virus A+B co-infection.
“9 were communicated new deaths confirmed with influenza virus. So far, 20 confirmed deaths with influenza virus have been reported: 2 type A, subtype H1; 8 type A, subtype H3; 9 type A 1 co-infection type A, subtype H3+B. The 20 deaths were recorded in the following age groups: 1 at 5-14 years; 1 at 15-49 years; 1 at 50-64 years; 17 to ≥65 years”reveal INSP statistics.
Until 11.01.2026, a number of 1,278,540 flu vaccinations were registered in the National Electronic Register of Vaccinations (RENV) (1,252,530 being for the population groups that benefit from settlement under the compensated regime), of which 6,021 flu vaccinations were given in authorized community pharmacies.
