Party subsidies fell, but spending rose above the monthly cap

The subsidies granted to political parties were reduced in 2026, as a result of the decisions adopted by the Government last year. According to the data of the Permanent Electoral Authority, the formations received up to 2 million lei less per month compared to the end of 2025, after in December the subsidies amounted to almost 20 million lei, and the annual total exceeded 232 million lei.

Decreases of 27% compared to December

The political formations that receive subsidies from the state received in the first month of the current year 27% less money compared to the previous month.

In the case of PSD, the party that receives the most money, the difference compared to the last month of last year is 1,830,334 lei. PSD received in the first month of 2026 4,801,515 lei. PNL received 2,614,110 lei, an amount lower by 996,497 lei compared to last December, and USR reached 1,855,474 lei, the lowest amount of a party in power, which means a difference of 707,306 lei.

On the other hand, the AUR party, the Opposition party, is in second place in terms of the amounts received from the state, so it lost over one million lei. He obtained 2,839,211 lei in January 2026, i.e. a difference of 1,082,306 lei.

And SOS Romania receives over one million lei from the state. The party obtained 1,234,237 lei in January, 470,490 lei less. In the case of POT, which is the party with the least money from the state, the amount decreases by 379,100 lei, reaching 994,491 lei.

Decreases of almost 35% from January 2025

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the difference in the amounts received by the parties reaches almost 35%.

The amount received by PSD decreased by 2,494,802 lei, and in the case of PNL by 1,358,256 lei. For USR, the amount compared to January last year decreased by 1,855,474 lei, and for AUR, which reached from four million to almost 3, the amount decreased by 1,475,216 lei.

For SOS the difference is 641,293 lei, and for POT 51,725 lei.

The smaller amounts come in the context in which the subsidy allocated to political parties decreases by 10% in 2026, compared to the level granted in 2025, according to the Train Ordinance. Last year, however, the parties’ reports indicate that they exceeded the amounts received from the state almost every month, spending more.

Another decrease of 10% comes from the fact that the budget for 2026 has not yet been adopted, explained Adrian Țuțuianu, president of AEP. “Starting from the two legal provisions and from the principle of prudent budget execution, he made an allocation for the month of January, in order to regulate things after the adoption of the state budget law”he indicated.
