An island in Greece, just 90 minutes by boat from Athens, still offers the authentic experience that many tourists seek, without traffic to cover the soothing sounds of the sea.
The island of Hydra is especially popular with older tourists, as it lacks busy roads or complicated public transport, writes Islands.com.
There is no pressure to be active every minute of the day, and visitors have the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the spectacular scenery. People with mobility problems can explore the harbor area relatively easily.
Tourists can also stroll around the harbor, go hiking, visit museums and historic mansions, or relax on beaches with turquoise waters. Trips to nearby islands are also popular.

One of the most unusual aspects of the island is the fact that there are no cars, motorbikes or bicycles. Travel is done on foot or by water taxis, and luggage is transported with the help of mules.
For this reason, Hydra is considered a quiet and safe destination, especially for tourists who prefer relaxing holidays.
The island is about an hour and a half by ferry from Athens, making it easier to access than other popular destinations like Santorini.
Hydra is also appreciated for its rocky landscapes, clear water beaches and connection with art and culture. Highlights include the Lazaros Kountouriotis Mansion, as well as boat tours and excursions to Poros.
The island’s main town has about 1,900 inhabitants
Hydra is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea. In Antiquity, it was known as Hydrea, a name derived from the Greek word for “water”, referring to the natural springs on the island.
The municipality of Hydra includes the main island of Hydra, the island of Dokos and several uninhabited islets, with a total area of approximately 64 km². It is currently part of the Attica region. The main city of the island is the port of Hydra, with about 1,900 inhabitants.
There are also small villages on the island such as Mandraki, Kamini, Vlychos, Palamidas, Episkopi and Molos.
Wheeled vehicles are prohibited on Hydra, including cars, motorcycles, scooters, bicycles and e-bikes.
Two years ago, a forest fire was started on the island by fireworks fired from a yacht.
“The fire, caused by fireworks launched from a boat, is burning the only pine forest on the island, in a place that is difficult to access and without roads”, seasonal firefighters on the island reported on Facebook, along with a photo, a situation that sparked outrage on social networks.
