The General Assembly of the Romanian Academy, meeting in the session of October 29, 2025, decided, by secret vote, to elect a number of 3 titular members and 2 corresponding members, as follows:

Regular members:

• Ana Blandiana (Otilia-Valeria Rusan), Department of Philology and Literature

• Nicolae-Ovidiu I. Badea, Department of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences

• Wilhelm Dancă, Department of philosophy, theology, psychology and pedagogy

Corresponding members:

• Viorel Jinga, Medical Sciences Section

• Luminiţa Chivu, Department of Economic, Legal and Sociology Sciences

“According to the Statute of the Romanian Academy and the provisions of law no. 752/2001, the title of academician can only be used by full members of the Academy”the institution also transmits.

At the beginning of the year, the Academy caused controversy in the public space after rejecting the candidacy of the writer Mircea Cărtărescu. He needed only one vote to become a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy.

“Unfortunately, he fell short of one vote in the General Assembly today. He needed to get 74 votes to have two-thirds of the electorate and only got 73. It’s a great pity for us because he was very warmly supported by the ward, but…”, declared university prof. Dr. Rodica Zafiu, head of the Philology section of the Academy, quoted by Edupedu.ro.

One month ago, the candidacy of the writer Mircea Cărtărescu was unanimously voted by the members of the Philology section of the Academy. “It was voted unanimously by those present, with 9 votes out of 9“, according to university professor Dr. Rodica Zafiu.

Ioan-Aurel Pop, president of the Romanian Academy, stated that he cannot comment on the decision taken by the members of the institution.

I should, as president of the Academy, be completely impartial and say nothing. I have the right to one vote in the General Assembly. But the world saw that I would have liked to see Mircea Cărtărescu among the members of the Academy“, stated Ioan-Aurel Pop for the quoted source.
