A Romanian TIR driver was fined a total of almost 10,000 euros by the traffic police in Italy, after he was caught transporting 400 eggs without provenance documents and using another driver’s card in the tachograph.
The incident took place on December 24, when traffic police from Pavia stopped a truck registered in Romania for control.
In the cargo compartment, 400 eggs were found without identification labels, without traceability documents and without guarantees regarding the observance of hygiene and sanitary standards. As a result, the Agency for the Protection of Public Health (ATS) was notified and ordered the immediate seizure and destruction of the products.
However, the irregularities did not stop at the goods. The checks carried out by the police showed that the truck was rented, but the leasing contract had expired, the tachograph had not been calibrated according to legal requirements, and the card of a different driver than the one behind the wheel was inserted into the machine.
The total of applied sanctions reached 9,695 euros. In addition, according to the Il Giorno publication, the Romanian driver’s driver’s license was suspended for a period of three months, and the truck was administratively impounded.
The transport of food products without indicating the origin violates the provisions of EC Regulation no. 178/2002 on food safety, and Italian legislation provides for the seizure and destruction of the goods, as well as significant administrative sanctions.
The authorities emphasized that the intervention was necessary to prevent possible public health risks, such as salmonella or bird flu.
