Sinner became the new world number 1 in tennis. Alcaraz’s rival, stripped of the crown at Monte Carlo

The Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner won the ATP Masters 1,000 tournament in Monte Carlo on Sunday, with a total prize money of 6,309,095 euros, in the final of which he defeated his great rival, the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, in two sets, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3.

The 24-year-old Sinner, who was coming off triumphs in the United States last month in Indian Wells and Miami, climbed to the top of the ATP rankings after this new success, dethroning Alcaraz, the holder of the Monte Carlo trophy. He thanked his mother for the success, who was in the box with the player’s girlfriend.

The Italian prevailed after two hours and 15 minutes of play in Sunday’s match, the first against Alcaraz since the start of this season.

On this occasion, Jannik Sinner achieved his seventh victory against the Iberian, who dominates the direct duels (10-7). Sinner recovered in 68 days a number of 3,350 points compared to Alcaraz.

It is the eighth ATP Masters 1,000 title and the biggest clay-court success of Sinner’s career, with just over a month to go before the Grand Slam at Roland Garros, where the Italian will look to avenge last year’s hard-fought final loss to Alcaraz after leading 2-0 in sets.

Fourth Masters in a row

After Paris, Indian Wells and Miami, the Monte Carlo tournament was Sinner’s fourth consecutive Masters 1000 title.

A feat previously accomplished only by Novak Djokovic (three times) and Rafael Nadal. The Serb was the last to do so, between Shanghai 2015 and Miami 2016, but the Iberian remains the only player to win four consecutive Masters titles in the same season.

His biggest achievement was 2013, when he triumphed in Madrid, Rome, Montreal and Cincinnati. Along the way, he also added Roland Garros and the US Open.

Sinner is now in her 67th week as world number 1 and is closing in on Sweden’s Stefa Edberg (72 weeks).
