Sosoacă says that the situation in Venezuela reminds of the elimination of the Ceaușescus: “Tomorrow it can be anyone”

Diana Iovanovici-Sosoacă claimed that she had a conversation on Sunday “directly with prominent members of the legitimate power in Venezuela” and compared the situation in this country with the arrest of the Ceaușescus in December 1989.

Diana Iovanovici-Soșoacă conveyed, through a statement published on Monday, that she had “a direct online conversation with prominent members of the legitimate power in Venezuela, statesmen with whom he has a strong relationship since January 2025, when he attended the inauguration ceremony of President Nicolas Maduro. In this diplomatic dialogue, the serious consequences of the recent events in Venezuela and the implications for the sovereignty of states in relation to external aggressions were analyzed.”

“This discussion is not accidental. Diana Iovanovici-Şoșoacă personally met President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, as well as ministers, parliamentarians and high-ranking Venezuelan officials, permanently maintaining a direct and official connection with them. Also, his close diplomatic relationship with the Venezuelan Embassy in Bucharest is well-known, the ambassador participating in the last two editions of the SOS Romania Summer School”it is also stated in the press release, according to which “today, no other representative of Romania has the same level of direct contact, diplomatic legitimacy and first-source information about the real situation in Venezuela as Diana Iovanovici-Şoșoacă”.

The communiqué then makes a comparison between the situation in Venezuela and the history of the fall of the communist regime in Romania, which it categorizes as “trauma”.

“The history of Venezuela is disturbingly similar to the history of Romania, Venezuela being the country with the largest oil reserves in the world. The interest of the great powers is obvious”says the MEP, according to which “today we see the same scenario again”.

“The brutal way in which the Maduro presidential couple was removed is strikingly reminiscent of the way the Ceaușescus were removed. Romania experienced this trauma 36 years ago. Today, Venezuela is going through the same kind of geopolitical experiment. (…) Such actions represent a serious violation of international law and the UN Charter. Venezuela is under attack today. Tomorrow it can be anyone. Romania is no longer allowed to remain an economic and political colony”concluded the leader of SOS Romania.

The reaction of the Romanian authorities

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Ţoiu, announced, on Saturday, January 3, that she discussed with the partners in the European Union for the alignment for a joint statement in preparation for the UN Security Council regarding the situation in Venezuela.

“The decision to bring Nicolas Maduro to justice can stop the growth of the scourge of drug trafficking, it can give Venezuelans the chance for a good future in prosperity, but it is also a decision that brings us to the table of diplomatic discussions to reaffirm and protect international rules”it transmitted.
