Liberal mayors are divided into three camps: some want the party to remain in government, regardless of the name of the prime minister. Others want to follow Bolojan into opposition, even if they lose funding for local projects. And the third camp consists of those who would like to be in power, but at the same time believe that Bolojan is the politician of the future, claim sources from the PNL leadership for Adevărul.
Both groups in the PNL, pro and anti-Bolojan, have had intense discussions with the liberal mayors in recent days. The majority current is on Bolojan’s side, but the camp of those who want to stay in power is also significant.
The mayors of Transylvania are willing to go into opposition with Bolojan. “Some already have three or four mandates behind them, they are seen very well in the community, they have accessed European funds, so they are sure that they will win the elections again in 2028, regardless of whether the party is in government or in opposition”, sources from the party leadership explain to Adevărul.
On the other hand, many PNL mayors want to stay in government for funding from the Ministry of Development.
“They have started projects and they cannot finish them if they do not receive funds from the government. And without these projects, promised in the 2024 election campaign, they risk losing their mandate in 2028”, explain the cited sources.
And the mayors who want to remain in power are divided into two camps: some are of the opinion that they will receive money from the government regardless of the name of the prime minister, others are more reluctant: Ilie Bolojan explained to them that it will be difficult to obtain financing from public money under the conditions in which Romania must reduce the budget deficit.
There is also the category of those who want to reconcile both the goat and the cabbage. Some elected liberals would still like to be in power, because they would hope to get funding, but at the same time they are convinced that Ilie Bolojan will dominate the political scene in the coming years, after the wave of sympathy in the last days.
So, they would like to govern, but with Bolojan as prime minister, a very unlikely scenario at the moment.
