The tricolor national team exceeded all expectations and, with victories on the line, qualified for the final of the European hosted by the Croatian city of Zadar. And in the last act of the final tournament, Romania presented itself at the highest level, but ran into France, a team as if from another planet. The main favorite, the holder of four continental titles, and the second team in the world, won 3-0, winning the gold medals.

The last medal “given” for 16 years

Andrei Filimon’s students took possession of the silver and qualified directly for next year’s World Cup, organized in London, after Iulian Chirița lost without appeal to Alexis Lebrun, so that Eduard Ionescu and Ovidiu Ionescu managed to win a set each against Felix Lebrun (Alexis’ brother) and Simon Gauzy.

For Romania, the 2025 edition of the European Championship will remain a historic tournament, in which it won silver medals in both the women’s and men’s competitions. The last medal won by the boys was 16 years ago, bronze in 2009, while the girls have now repeated the performance from the last two ECs.

France – Romania 3-0

Simon Gauzy – Ovidiu Ionescu: 3-1 (11-9, 11-9, 3-11, 11-3)
