Cluj-Napoca City Hall tested a state-of-the-art drone, valued at approximately 40,000 euros, which will be used to monitor the city, identify risk situations and support authorities’ interventions. The system was publicly presented and described as a “intelligent eye of the city”.
The drone transmits real-time images to the Local Police command center and is equipped with advanced surveillance technology, including high-resolution camera, infrared and thermal imaging sensors.
The device can detect differences in body temperature and could be used to search for people who are missing or wanted by the authorities.
The equipment has a flight autonomy of approximately 52 minutes, a range of up to 40 kilometers and can reach speeds of up to 90 km/h. In practice, however, in the urban environment it will operate at much lower altitudes than the declared maximum technical limit of 7,000 meters, writes monitorulcj.
Mayor Emil Boc declared that the drone will be used to check illegal constructions, monitor construction sites and supervise areas considered problematic.
“We take street by street, roof by roof. No one will build illegally in Cluj-Napoca”said the mayor during the presentation.
Also, the drone can be used to identify illegal waste deposits and to track the evolution of road traffic, especially in areas entering and exiting the city.
According to the cited publication, the drone will also play an important role in the management of emergency situations, such as fires, floods or landslides, providing a real-time overview of the affected areas.
At the same time, the system could be used at events with a large audience, including festivals or football matches, to monitor the flow of people and potential risk situations.
“We can see masses of people and the direction they are moving to intervene if necessary,” explained Emil Boc.
The acquisition of the drone is part of the digitalization strategy of the local administration.
