The Education Unions announce the postponement of the general strike in pre-university education

Federation of Free Trade Unions in Education (FSLI) and Federation of Education Trade Unions “Spiru Haret” announced on Thursday the postponement of the general strike scheduled for May 25, 2026, after the results of the internal referendum showed that the conditions for starting the protest were not met.

According to the two federations, only 19.2% of union members voted “YES” to the referendum regarding the organization of the general strike. The union leaders claim that the result is influenced by the political context generated by the dismissal of the Bolojan Government.

“Following the centralization of the options expressed by the union members, it was found that the objective and statutory conditions for triggering this protest are not met”the union representatives sent in a statement.

They stated that many of the employees who voted in favor of the strike “they have shown that they are ready to fight”but there are fears that a protest action organized in the absence of a Government with full powers “will remain without result”.

Unions say the demands of education workers remain “entirely legitimate” and will be presented to the new Executive immediately after the investiture. At the same time, the union leaders announced that they will continue the pressure in the Parliament and sent a message to the president Nicușor Dan.

“We will once again remind President Nicușor Dan that he is in arrears with us”FSLI and FSE representatives sent “Spiru Haret”.

The two federations warn that the protests could be resumed if the future Government does not respond to the problems in the education system.

“In the extremely likely situation in which the future Executive will be refractory to the problems that seriously affect pre-university education, the protest actions will be resumed”the unions also sent.

The teachers’ representatives claim that education in Romania is going through “one of the deepest crises of the last 35 years” and call for solidarity and involvement from union members.
