The MAI warns that there is no “Full Traffic Monitoring” from April 17, as circulated on the Internet. “Panic and distrust in state institutions is generated”

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) draws attention to a new method of disinformation that circulates online and on messaging platforms, regarding an alleged comprehensive monitoring of road traffic in Romania.

According to the authorities, the messages announcing the introduction, starting on April 17, 2026, of a total surveillance system of the national roads and the main arteries in Bucharest are completely false and have the role of inducing panic among the population.

“In the last few hours, on social networks and messaging platforms (WhatsApp), an alarmist message has been circulating regarding a “full monitoring” of the national roads and the main arteries in Bucharest, starting on 04/17/2026. We officially inform you: THIS MESSAGE IS FAKE!”, the MAI representatives sent in a post published on the Facebook page.

Officials emphasize that such information is deliberately created to generate distrust in state institutions and advise citizens to always verify the source before sharing such messages.

Why you shouldn’t “Share”:

– False information: The text mixes fictitious project names with fragments of reality to mislead.

– Anonymous source: Official information on road safety and monitoring systems is communicated EXCLUSIVELY through the official channels of the MAI and the Romanian Police.

– Purpose of the message: Such texts are created to generate panic and mistrust in state institutions.

This is not the first time such rumors have surfaced

In December 2025, the MAI signaled a similar misinformation related to an alleged total control of citizens’ mobility, information denied at that time by the authorities.

Regarding the actual monitoring systems, the Minister of the Interior, Cătălin Predoiu, previously explained that the project “E-Sigur – Integrated Road Monitoring System” it aims to increase road safety, not abusive surveillance of the population. It involves the use of images collected from traffic cameras to identify violations and issue digital minutes.

The MAI stated that the implementation of the system is based on a clear legal framework, and the connection of the cameras installed by local authorities is carried out only after approval and testing, to avoid errors that could lead to the cancellation of sanctions in court.
