In this context, in order to have direct access to the correct information and to understand the context of the reform, Minister Daniel David addressed a letter to his Ukrainian counterpart, insisting on the importance of taking into account of the legitimate requests made by the representatives of the Romanian minority, as well as the need to respect the rights of persons belonging to the Romanian minority to education in their mother tongue, in accordance with the international commitments assumed by Ukraine”, it is stated in a press release of the Ministry of Education and Research, sent on Wednesday.

Daniel David proposed the organization of consultations

In the same press release, the Ministry of Education specifies that Daniel David proposed the organization of consultations between the two institutions, affirming his willingness to present Romania’s experience and practice regarding education in the language of national minorities, “practice widely appreciated internationally“.

“Solutions based on dialogue, public consultation and respect for the needs of each community”

The MEC shows that it understands the difficulties related to reforming a large budget system to anchor it “dynamic in modernity”but claims that it is important that the decisions taken at the local, regional or national level do not affect the exercise of the right to education of ethnic Romanians in Ukraine who wish to study in their mother tongue.

“We want to promote a constructive dialogue with the Ukrainian authorities. The experience of the Ministry of Education and Research shows that only solutions based on dialogue, public consultation and respect for the needs of each community determine the success of any educational reform process”, emphasized Daniel David, according to the press release.

A week ago, the responsible secretary of the Interregional Union “The Romanian Community of Ukraine”Aurica Bojescu, declared for Agerpres, that numerous high schools with teaching in the Romanian language in the Chernivtsi region will disappear starting from September 1, 2027, as a result of the reorganization of the education system.

According to her, the Chernivtsi Regional Council approved the new high school network in the region, which provides only four high schools with teaching in Romanian and nine mixed high schools.

In August, the Romanian community in Ukraine appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania to intervene to maintain education in the Romanian language.

“The theme of education is the most important, because if we don’t have a school, we won’t have a church, we won’t have our national identity either. (…) We must continue to have this right. (…) If we give up the school now, it means that we will give up what is more expensive“, Bojescu declared, according to Agerpres.
