The villa dates back to the 16th century and belonged to Agostino Chigi (1466-1520), a wealthy banker and politician. Davide Renzoni, the electrician who discovered the works of art, had opened a hatch to inspect a previously unexplored area.
“I went to get a flashlight and when I turned it on, everything appeared: it was a miracle“, reports Renzoni for AFP.
The painting represents a bucolic landscape, next to which is an angel with a golden helmet, and the body of another angel draped in white appears on a brick background, forming another fragment of the same fresco.
To reach the paintings, climb a small scaffolding and pass through two hatches, all wearing a helmet for safety.
An exhibition, “Il Seicento in Villa Farnesina”, is organized in the premises until January 12, 2025.
