With a budget of only $750,000, the horror film “Obsession” managed the rare feat of surpassing $400 million in worldwide box office. Its success makes it one of the highest-grossing movie productions of 2026.
Roughly two months after its theatrical release, the independent production has grossed $403 million worldwide.
According to Variety, the film grossed $245 million in North America and another $157 million internationally, continuing to draw audiences at a time when most films lose commercial traction after their first eight weekends.
The performance continued into the July 4th mini-holiday, when “Obsession” grossed another $5.3 million in North American theaters. Internationally, the film added another $12 million, solidifying its status as a 2026 box office phenomenon.
According to Variety’s analysis, the film is approaching the $250 million mark in North America, a rare performance in the post-pandemic era, in the context of which streaming platforms have significantly changed the consumption habits of the public.
Data released by Box Office Mojo shows that “Obsession” currently ranks seventh among the highest-grossing films of 2026. At the same time, the production has surpassed numerous titles with considerably larger budgets.
By comparison, “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,” made on an estimated budget of $165 million, is in ninth place with $329 million worldwide.
Romanian audiences could see “Obsession” starting on June 26, a few weeks after the premiere in the United States.
The feature marks the theatrical debut of director Curry Barker, known for the YouTube channel “that’s a bad idea.”
The cast includes Michael Johnston as Bear and Inde Navarrette as Nikki.
