A tragedy occurred on Monday evening in the center of Jordan’s capital, Amman, where a stampede occurred among supporters gathered to watch the match between Jordan and Algeria, in the 2026 World Cup. The incident resulted in one death and eight injuries.

The tragedy occurred in the Hashemite Square, which became a meeting point for thousands of fans watching the match broadcast from the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, where Jordan lost 1-2 in Group J of the World Cup, according to the Jordanian News Agency, quoted by Reuters.

The intervention teams transported nine people injured in the stampede to the hospital.

Later, one of the victims died. The other victims suffered minor injuries, stated the representatives of the Directorate of Public Security.

The authorities announced that experts are to determine exactly what was the cause of death.

Huge enthusiasm at Jordan’s first participation in a World Cup

Large crowds of supporters gathered in several areas of Amman to watch the match, with Jordan making its first appearance at a World Cup finals tournament.

The Jordanian national team opened the scoring through Nizar Alrashdan in the 36th minute, but Algeria made a spectacular comeback in the second half, scoring through Nadhir Benbouali (69) and Amine Gouiri (82).

After defeats against Austria (1–3) and Algeria (1–2), Jordan will play their final group game on 28 June against world champions Argentina, and will exit the competition regardless of the result.
