The file in which the former presidential election candidate Călin Georgescu is accused of complicity in attempted actions against the constitutional order and the communication of false information returned, on Monday, June 29, before the judges of the High Court of Cassation and Justice, after one of the magistrates who were part of the panel formulated a request to abstain, which was later accepted by the court.

The trial is at the stage where the judges have to decide whether the case will proceed to trial on the merits.

We remind you that, on April 2, the Bucharest Court of Appeal decided to start the trial, but Călin Georgescu and the other defendants, including Horaţiu Potra, contested the decision, and the case reached the supreme court. Initially, the file was assigned to a panel consisting of judges Paul Mihail Frațilescu and Adina Adriana Radu. The two heard the pleas of the parties on April 14, but postponed the pronouncement of a solution three times.

Meanwhile, one of the magistrates made a request to abstain, which was granted, so the debates resumed on Monday, with a new judge.

It is about the file in which the General Prosecutor’s Office sent Călin Georgescu to court for complicity in attempting to commit actions against the constitutional order and for the communication of false information, in continuous form, together with Horațiu Potra and 20 other mercenaries from his group.

According to the prosecutors, the members of the group led by Horațiu Potra would have sought to infiltrate the protests organized after the cancellation of the December 2024 presidential elections, with the aim of causing violence and chaos. The investigators claim that the plan was established in a meeting held at a farm in Ciolpani, immediately after the cancellation of the election, a meeting attended by Călin Georgescu and people from his close circle.

A little while ago, Călin Georgescu left the courtroom, where he was awaited by several supporters, but, unlike other times, he was quite reserved in his statements and did not stay to answer the journalists’ questions. After wishing happy birthday to those who celebrate the name day of St. Peter and Paul, when asked about the annulment of the elections, he said briefly but evasively “With the Romanian people to the end” and left the court premises.
