President’s message
On the occasion of Romanian Diplomacy Day, President Klaus Iohannis emphasizes that diplomacy has been deeply affected in recent years by geopolitical, digital and social changes. He notes that the future of Romania depends not only on the power of the nation, but also on the efficiency and influence of national diplomacy.
“The Day of Romanian Diplomacy gives me the opportunity to congratulate the entire diplomatic and consular corps of Romania for the activity carried out for the external promotion of the interests of the Romanian state and Romanian citizens, for ensuring the influence and prestige of our country in the world. In a marked international context of conflicts, crises and the contestation by a series of actors of the global order based on rules, Romania benefits from security and stability and contributes to ensuring European security, thanks to a coherent, courageous foreign policy, guided by clear and well-established principles and values in application.Diplomacy continues to have a decisive role in ensuring peace and a favorable framework for the progress of Romania and for the increase of the well-being of its citizens. The contribution is defining in this sense Romanian diplomacy on configuring an appropriate response to the major security challenges posed by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.”, the president conveyed.
President Klaus Iohannis emphasized that Romanian diplomacy played a crucial role in promoting the strengthening of defense on NATO’s Eastern Flank and in highlighting the strategic importance of the Black Sea for Europe
“This included intensive promotional efforts within the framework nato and of the European Union of the imperative to strengthen the defense and deterrence capacity on the Eastern Flank. At the same time, he emphasized the strategic importance of the Black Sea area for the stability and prosperity of the whole of Europe. Also, the role of Romanian diplomats in intensifying Romania’s strategic interaction with the USA and with the other reference partners within the Euro-Atlantic community, as well as at the global level, was an indispensable one. The approach was all the more relevant against the background of Russia’s extensive hybrid threats directed against the democratic world. The development of multidimensional cooperation with neighboring states, but also from other regions of the world, the promotion of Romania’s objectives within the EU – from our country’s accession to the Schengen area , to support the Union expansion process. – The advancement of some country projects, such as joining the OECD – all of these are equally significant and would not have been possible without the active involvement of the members of the Romanian diplomatic and consular corps.”, Klaus Iohannis added.
The President conveyed to the members of Romania’s diplomatic and consular corps that diplomacy is facing geopolitical, digital and social transformations, demanding constant adaptation.
“Dear members of the Romanian diplomatic and consular corps, Diplomacy has been subject to new geopolitical, digital and social transformations in recent years, which implies continuous adaptation. In this context, the activity and responsibility of a diplomat have changed in a substantial way. I remind you that the destiny of Romania is the result of the strength that our nation has and, implicitly, of the strength that the country’s diplomacy shows, offering through you the example of a reliable, stable and responsible partner. Regardless of whether you work in the MFA Headquarters, in the embassies and consular offices of Romania abroad or carry out activities within other institutions or organizations, I urge you to continue to act with the same professionalism and devotion to fulfill the extremely important mission that you have. Happy birthday!”concluded the president.
Prime Minister’s message
For his part, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu declared that he had sent a message on Romanian Diplomacy Day. The Prime Minister stated that Romanian diplomacy plays an essential role in Romania’s contribution to regional and global stability and security, as well as in protecting and defending national interests and Romanian citizens in a world marked by uncertainty.
“The Diplomatic and Consular Corps of Romania marks today, September 1, the Romanian Diplomacy Day. I would like to congratulate my colleagues in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their work and for the way they manage and adapt to the complex developments and challenges resulting from the current international situation” Prime Minister Ciolacu said.
He added that “the world is going through unprecedented changes in the last decades and they affect both global balances and the security situation.”
“An illegal and unprovoked war is brutally waged against a sovereign state with the aim of limiting its sovereignty, occupying and annexing territories. It is unacceptable and represents a threat to the entire free and democratic world. We will continue to support Ukraine by all means as long as necessary,” said Marcel Ciolacu.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the Republic of Moldova, which recently celebrated 33 years of independence and whose sovereign decision to join the European Union we strongly support, is facing unprecedented campaigns of influence and intimidation. “But not only in the immediate vicinity, but also in the Near East or in Africa, we see conflicts that risk dangerous regional escalations and major humanitarian crises,” mentions Marcel Ciolacu.
According to the Prime Minister, “the role of Romanian diplomacy is to bring Romania’s contribution to regional and global stability and security, but also to ensure the protection and defense of the national interest and the citizens of Romania in this troubled world.”
“I emphasize, all the more, the importance of continuing to support the objectives and values of a coherent, firm, dynamic and principled foreign policy, focused on increasing Romania’s profile within the European Union and within NATO and on strengthening and expanding the Strategic Partnership with the United States,” shows Ciolacu.
He added that, in the implementation of foreign policy and in the action of Romanian diplomacy, “promoting national strategic interests, strengthening ties and cooperation with states with which we share the same values and protecting the rights of Romanian citizens remain essential – elements that contribute to the development and resilience of Romania and Romanian society as a whole.”
“Constant dialogue and connections with members of Romanian communities outside the country’s borders also constitute a priority line of action for Romanian diplomacy, both from the perspective of representation or administrative and consular services, but also for the promotion and support of the values of our cultural and spiritual identity. Happy birthday to Romanian Diplomacy!” says Ciolacu in the message.
