The city in the west of the country is recommended as an alternative to overcrowded cities such as Paris, Amsterdam and Rome for British travelers by the UK publication Express. This while protests against tourists are taking place in many popular European destinations.
Often called the “Little Vienna” of Europe, Timisoara boasts elegant buildings similar to those in the Austrian capital. However, Brits will be pleasantly surprised to learn that the price of coffee is considerably lower in this Romanian city.
Timișoara, former European Capital of Culture in 2023, stands out for its rich program of musical, artistic and theatrical events.
“As if Wizz Air’s cheap direct flights to Timisoara, which cost an average of £89 in October, weren’t enough, accommodation and food are also a bargain.“, write the British journalists.
According to Numbeo, a 0.5 liter beer costs just 10 lei (£1.69) and a meal in an affordable restaurant is 40 lei (£6.77). Hotels rated well on Booking.com have average rates of around £175 for three nights for two adults, while apartments are even cheaper, with prices not exceeding £100.
Timisoara is a wonderful city to explore on foot, with Piața Victoriei as your starting point.
“The main square occupies an important place in Romanian history, as it is where Timișoara announced that it was the first city free from communism in 1989. Don’t forget to visit the Romanian National Opera or the Metropolitan Cathedral, which is the largest historical Orthodox church in Romania.“, wrote a tourist on Trip Advisor.
In addition, tourists can also find here the Revolution Memorial, a museum that tells about the 1989 revolution that started in Timișoara.
The city has many beautiful and relaxing green spaces, such as the Rose Park and the Botanical Park. To experience the local cuisine, the British publication recommends that tourists try the sarmales, “a local delicacy“.
“I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s amazing!”, commented a tourist from Wilmslow, UK who visited Timisoara in October 2023, on TripAdvisor, about Piața Victoriei.
“Beautiful green area with flowers, great photo with view of the Orthodox Cathedral. It also has the wolf statue and the fish fountain,” wrote another traveler from the United Kingdom.
Timișoara is also famous for its craft beers, including Timișoreana Blonde Lager.
