While Romanians enjoy on February 24 Dragobete, the celebration of love in Romanian traditions, Muslims are preparing for Berat Kandili, a special night celebrated in prayer, on the night of Saturday to Sunday, February 24/25, 2024.

Marked on the 15th night of the month of Shaban (n. ed. – month preceding the holy month of Ramadan), Berat Kandili is one of the 5 Holy Nights of Islam, in which through prayer and glorification of the Great Creator of the Universe, of the seen and the unseen, of the known and of the unknown, the believer obtains the forgiveness of sins and purifies his soul from the fog of sin”mentions the Mufti of the Muslim Cult in Romania.

Religious services are held in all the windows, in the municipality of Constanța the communal service on the occasion of Berat Kandili is scheduled at the Hunkiar Window starting at 17:30.

Mufti of the Muslim Cult in Romania, Muurat Iusuf, appeals, on this occasion, to all Muslim believers in Romania and beyond, to pray for the good of all humanity.

May all our sins be forgiven on this Holy Night!

May the divine light guide our steps towards changing our own thoughts and experiences for the better!

May peace last on the entire Mapamondul!

Berat Kandilimiz mübarek olsun!

Berat Kandîlîmîz kayîrlâ bolsîn!”is the message posted on the official account of the Muftiate of the Muslim Cult in Romania.

Prayers and sweets shared

Muslims believe that on the night of Berat Allah forgives their sins and purifies them. The meaning of the word “Berat” is, by the way, “to get rid of a weight, to be acquitted”, according to Wikipedia.

According to the same source, on the 15th night of the month of Sha'ban, Allah determines the important events that will take place during the year: births, deaths, calamities, disasters, etc.

Berat Night is celebrated in many areas of the globe – South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan and Turkey, and Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan) – either with reverence or pomp and gaiety.

People give candy to children in Iraq, in South Asia sweets are made that Muslims distribute to neighbors and the poor, while in Turkey Muslims go to mosques and spend the night worshiping Allah.
